Lash FAQ's
Updated: Dec 6, 2020
How long do extensions last? They can last indefinitely as long as you keep up with fills, which are recommended every 2-3 weeks. Because we naturally shed between 3-5 lashes per day, anything after 3 weeks will be considered and charged as a new set..
Do extensions make my natural lashes fall out? No. Individual lash extensions differ from clusters (which DO make natural lashes fall!) in that each extension is applied to each natural lash one by one with a medical grade adhesive. When natural lashes shed, the extension sheds along with it, allowing healthy regrowth of new lash. We do NOT use clusters, only individual extensions. All of our lash artists are certified and undergo extensive training in order to offer high quality services. Our priority ALWAYS is to maintain the integrity of natural lashes. During an initial consultation, we will give a client our recommendation on a service that will NOT damage natural lashes.
What is the process for extensions? It is an extremely relaxing experience for every client! Client just lays on a comfy bed for the duration of the process (2-3 hours depending on style) with eyes closed. We place collagen eye pads under client's eyes and we get to work! Each extension is applied to each individual natural lash, one by one which is why it is very time consuming. For a lash extension appointment, please be prepared to lay down for 2.5-3 hours. Your eyes will remain closed for the entire process - you are welcome to bring a blanket, take a lash nap or put on your headphones! If you suffer from anxiety and are unable to lay still for that amount of time, please inform staff so that we may discuss other lash services that require less time. We also ask that you place your cell phone on silent and keep it away from your hands, in order to allow you to maintain your eyes closed for service.
Can I get a lash lift and extensions? - We do not recommend these two services at the same time. Because a lash lift requires lashes to be left alone for at least 24 hours in order for the lift to set.
My lashes are really short/thin! What service do you recommend? If you are concerned about the condition of you natural lashes but are considering a service, schedule a free consultation so that we can discuss the best option for you. We offer a variety of lash services that are customizable for every type of lash!
Can I get lash lift/extensions if I've recently had Lasik? - Yes, however, it is recommended that you wait at least 6 months after the Lasik. Always consult your physician before making any decisions.
Can I get my extensions wet? - Yes, but gently! Aftercare instructions are to not get extensions wet for 24 hours after application. After 24 hours, you can swim, shower and get extensions wet, just do not rub extensions. Let them air dry.
Can I swim with extensions? - Yes, but wait 24 hours after getting them done to ensure adhesive is fully cured. Chlorine and salt water may affect the adhesive, so it's a good idea to rinse your lashes with your oil-free cleanser after.
I just got extensions about 1 week ago and almost all of them have fallen off! Why and what do I do? - We need to figure out what happened, did you follow aftercare instructions properly (got them wet, washed them, got oil on them...)? Do you sleep on your stomach, face? It's best if you contact us so we can try and figure out what the problem was, and if possible do a touch up. If proper care was not practiced and you would like to get another set, regular price will be charged for a new set. We also offer weekly touch up's for those clients who would like to keep their lashes on point 24/7!
Does a lash lift damage my natural lashes/what’s the process/care? No. A lash lift is essentially a lash perm - a special perming solution is applied for about 8 minutes, then a setting solution is applied for another 8 minutes and that’s it! Perm lasts from 6-8 weeks and absolutely no damage is caused to natural lashes, and no maintenance is required. The only thing I do recommend, is to not wear waterproof mascara, as it can be harsh when removing and may break down the perm quicker. Other than that, you can wear any eye makeup you'd like, and you do not have to use a lash curler anymore!
I got a lash lift/tint a few weeks ago and now my lashes are growing weird! This is absolutely normal. When a lash lift is performed, all of your lashes are "permed" to a beautiful curl. Our lashes shed daily, so new lashes are constantly growing out. When our new growths come in, they will grow in their natural lash shape - so if you had straight lashes before getting the lash lift, your natural lashes will come in straight. Therefore, a few weeks (or even days) after getting a lash lift, you will notice some lashes are still curled (from the lift) and some lashes are straight (new growth). Everyone's hair growth speed is different, so this does not happen often. When it does, we can either redo the lift to curl all the new growth, or we can relax the lashes. Relaxing the lashes is a process that removes the curl from the lash lift, and essentially straightens lashes. This takes about 10 minutes and does not damage lashes whatsoever.
I just got a lash lift yesterday and I loved it - and today my lashes went back down! Did you follow the aftercare instructions? Did you sleep on your face? Contact us so we can figure out what went wrong and we will redo the lift at no cost to you!
I am pregnant/planning on getting pregnant, is a lash lift safe for me? Yes, however, it is always best to consult your doctor before deciding on any lash service. It is also best to have a patch test done a few days before in order to be aware of any allergies to any products. You can schedule a free patch test under "Services" tab. We also recommend that if you do decide to book any lash service while pregnant, please do so after the third trimester of pregnancy.
Are extensions, lash lifts safe for my teen? I would not recommend anyone under the age of 18 to get lash extensions. They require quite a bit of maintenance, however, if your teen is up for the required maintenance, she will need an adult to come in with her and sign consent forms for her services. Lash lifts are easy to maintain therefore, are a great option for teens! An adult must come in with teen and sign consent form for that service as well.
Can I wear mascara after a lash lift? - Yes. 24 hours after Lash Lift/Tint was performed. It is also recommended that you remove mascara with an oil-free cleanser to keep perm intact longer. We also retail Elleevate Mascara - a mascara/treatment that is great after having a lash lift done. It nourishes lashes and promotes growth!
Can I wear mascara on my extensions? - No. Extensions are already dark and you do not need to wear mascara or use an eyelash curler. You may wear eye liner, eye shadow and any other eye makeup as long as you gently cleanse your lashes every night with an oil-free cleanser (which we sell for $5!). The cleaner you keep your lash extensions, the longer they'll last!
Can I wear any other eye makeup (liner, eyeshadow) with extensions? Yes. We sell an eyeliner that is safe for extensions. It is best to wear oil free eye makeup when possible. When wearing eye makeup, it is very important to wash it off with an oil-free makeup remover at the end of the day. Not washing off makeup will create buildup making it easy for bacteria to bread - causing extensions to fall quicker and even worse, cause a blepharitis infection. Keeping extensions clean is key to longer retention and good eye health.
Do I need an appointment? YES. Lash extensions require 2.5-3 hours (sometimes longer if you have a lot of lashes!) and lash lift requires at least 45 minutes. All of MJ's services are by appointment only. The best way to book an appointment is here on the website. The site is always up to date on availability, what is showing as available/not available is always accurate.
Can I shower after a lash lift/tint/extensions? Yes, but do not rub eyelashes. Be gentle. Try not to drench lashes with water. For extensions, it is recommended to not wet lashes for 24 hours after applied. If you had a tint done, do not use any cleanser on lashes for 48 hours.
What about going the gym? We recommend you skip the gym on the day of the service, or go before your appointment. After, you may continue exercising with extensions/lift however, we do recommend to wear a headband to help avoid sweat running down your eyes. Sweat contains natural oils and will affect the adhesive on extensions. If sweat does come in contact with lashes, make sure you always wash them with your oil-free cleanser after the gym.
Can I wear makeup to my appointment? No. For all lash services, clients must arrive without any eye makeup. A $15 make-up removing fee will be charged if makeup needs to be removed. Removing eye makeup takes time away from lashing, resulting in less lashes applied.
What maintenance is required for extensions? Clean, clean, clean your lashes! Clean lashes mean longer retention. Make sure you use an oil-free cleanser to gently wash your lashes daily from any makeup. Oils and makeup that is not cleansed properly cause build up and break down adhesive, resulting in shorter retention of extensions. Do not rub your eyes, do not pull on your lashes and try not to sleep on your face. Extension safe sleeping masks are also available for you crazy sleepers!
I got my lashes done somewhere else, can I book my fill with you? We do not fill any outside work. Every lash artist has their own personal style and technique. It is nearly impossible to match the exact same work as another artist. For this reason, we recommend a complete removal and a new set. If you have outside work and would like to book a new set with us, send us a note and we will not charge extra for a removal!
What is a Lash TInt - Lash Tinting is a process that entails dying lashes black. The process takes about 10-15 minutes and the same aftercare is recommended as Lash Lifts - no mascara or cleansers on tinted areas for 24 hours. Tints last up to 1 week and cause absolutely no damage to lashes. Tinting can be booked alone, or with a Lash Lift.
Can I bring my small kids? - No, please. The lash extension process takes from 2.5-3 hours, and lash lifts take about 1 hour. Services require the client to lay down through the entire services, with eyes closed, while the lash artist, carefully glues extensions to natural lashes one by one. This technique requires an EXTREME amount of focus and concentration and as little movement from client as possible. If you have little ones, we ask that you please make arrangements for childcare/school pick-up PRIOR to lash appointment. We also ask that any guests accompanying the client wait in the front lobby, as we try to keep the appointment as private as possible.
Can I use my phone while lashing? - No! Every lash process requires the client to lay down with eyes closed. Please silence or place phones on vibrate for the duration of the process. When we are in the middle of a lashing process and a client is constantly checking a cell phone, it takes time away from the appointment and less lashes will be applied. When clients open their eyes during lashing, it is impossible for extensions to be applied, and because adhesive is fresh on lashes, it WILL cause a burning sensation. PLEASE keep eyes closed, and please DO NOT ask us to check your phone for you!
Can I chew gum while you do my lashes? - No. When you are chewing gum, your temples are constantly working that little muscle that is connected to your jaw, and your temples are right next to your eyes which means your eyes will be moving. Please discard any chewing gum before starting the service.
Why do I have to pay a deposit to book? - Deposits are required to secure appointments. Any amount paid as a deposit, goes towards your booked service - so think of it as a small payment for services! If you cannot make your appointment for any reason PLEASE contact us as soon as possible so we can either cancel if needed, or reschedule. A 24 hour cancellation notice is required, and if you contact us to cancel within that time, we will refund your deposit. If you do not attend your appointment and do not notify, you will be considered a no call/no show and your deposit will be forfeited.
Can I take a nap? - Absolutely! You are also welcomed to bring your favorite blanket and your ear buds and listen to music on your phone while you lay down.
